About Baghchal — Tigers vs Goats
Baghchal Online brings the classic experience of the traditional Nepali board
game to the digital world. Also known as Bagh Chal ("Move of the Tigers"), Bagchal, or simply
Tigers and Goats, this famous Nepali board game is a two-player strategy game where one person
plays as four tigers and the other plays as twenty goats.
The Baghchal board is a 5×5 grid with lines connecting the intersection points. Here are the core rules:
- The Goal: Tigers want to capture 5 goats. Goats want to trap all 4 tigers so they cannot
move.
- Setup: The 4 tigers start in the four corners of the board.
- Phase 1 (Placement): The goat player places their 20 goats on the board one by one on
empty intersections. During this phase, tigers can move one step along the lines and can capture goats by
jumping.
- Phase 2 (Movement): After all 20 goats are placed, goats can finally move one step at a
time along the lines.
- Capturing: Tigers can capture a goat by jumping over it into an empty space beyond it
(just like in checkers). Goats cannot jump or capture.
- Control the Center: Place your first few goats in the middle of the board to block the
tigers early. The center has the most connections.
- Work as a Team: Keep your goats close together in connected groups. An isolated goat is
easy prey for a tiger.
- Be Patient: Slowly trap the tigers by reducing their available moves. Don't rush — your
starting placement is the most important part of the game.
- Hunt the Weak: Look for goats that are alone near the edges or corners and capture them
quickly before formations solidify.
- Keep Moving: Don't let your tigers get stuck in the corners. Keep them in open positions
so they have room to jump.
- Break Formations: If you see the goats building a strong wall, jump over them early
before they finish surrounding you.
